Key Stage 3 & above
Students taking part in Blakeley’s education programmes will investigate solutions to challenges in the waste industry. We will introduce Blakeley’s and an industry linked project to the learners with a short video and presentation.
Enterprise Challenge
This interactive programme develops enterprise skills in decision making, planning, organizing, communication, teamwork and working to deadlines. Students will able to understanding the basics of finance, budgeting and risk management.
Students will be set a team challenge to create a business plan and make a prototype product using waste materials. They will also produce an advertising campaign and present their ‘pitch’ to the whole class.
Throughout, there will be a focus on employment skills, sales and marketing skills, leadership skills, whilst developing confidence, motivation, determination, creativity and presentation skills.
This programme can be offered as a half day in school or as a number of repeated hour sessions to fit in with an organised enterprise day.
Maths Challenge
There are many areas of the business that involve mathematics. Materials are collected and transported; they must be weighed going in out of the site; the routes for the vehicles must be planned. Every day the Blakeley’s team use maths in their work, the students can investigate how, who and why maths is used. Learners can also offer solutions and make suggestions based upon real scenarios, including using data to analyse, plot and construct graphs.
A fun activity is offered to bring together a work related maths problem. The students are given the challenge to make a container to carry as much waste as possible. Strict criteria apply and only the use of maths and accuracy will create the best solution.
English and Creative Writing
We use a number of cartoon characters to communicate waste and recycling messages to young children. Students can develop short stories using the characters, with the opportunity for the stories to be published on our website for Key Stage 1 or lower Key Stage 2 pupils. There is also an opportunity for your school to engage with feeder primary schools and base curriculum work on real life scenarios.
