Planning Announcement 14.09.10

Blakeley’s Waste Management Ltd is pleased to announce that the company has now received a resolution to approve its plans for an Environment Energy and Ecology Centre at today’s Wigan Council planning meeting.

The committee recognised the need for a facility which could divert waste from landfill and were complementary of the company’s plans which will involve the local community.

The Environment, Energy and Ecology Centre will use state of the art separation equipment in its automated materials recycling facility to maximise the recycling of all the waste brought to site. Blakeleys will be one of the first in the country to use gasification technology in order to convert the residual Organic fraction into Green Electricity which will be exported to the national grid. This green electricity will help towards national government targets to create energy from renewable sources rather than fossil fuels which will help in the fight against climate change.

There is also the potential to increase the efficiency of the operation by using the heat generated for district heating and the company are in discussions with potential users so that the facility can become a true combined Heat and Power generator.

In addition to the work the companies education officer is undertaking with local schools the proposals include a nature reserve which will increase biodiversity and create additional habitat for protected species. This Centre will further enhance the company’s ability to educate young people in the philosophy of Reduce Reuse Recycle and provide a real life experience of recycling, recovery of energy from waste together with the protection and enhancement of ecology and the environment.

Mr Stephen Blakeley, Managing Director, wishes to express his thanks to the many factions of the local community who voiced their support for the plans. He added “this facility will be unique to the UK and means that the company can recover all the recyclate within the waste stream and divert 100% of waste from landfill. Zero Landfill has long been an ambition of mine and this decision means the company can achieve that goal.”
